Tawhiti School Panui - Term 2, Week 8, 2023

tawhiti

Kia ora e te whānau,

Term 2 is chugging along beautifully for us at school. As a staff, we are so proud of the progress we are seeing in your children's writing; we have many budding writers amongst our team! We look forward to sharing this progress with you at whānau hui next term. We have wrapped up our unit on fractions in maths and once again the progress made in this area was really positive. A huge thank you to everyone who supported and encouraged this learning at home - it really made a difference. Our last maths unit for this term is addition which will then lead into a subtraction unit next term. Supporting your children with their basic facts at home, will boost their progress in these areas.

We continue to focus on perseverance across the school. We have also added a focus recently on fair play. We have been unpacking what a good attitude in sports looks like and sounds like and this will be used to develop a fair play code with our tamariki. This has come about as we have had a few incidents on the field at break times at school and when children are representing our school for sport.

Lastly, there are a group of Tawhiti Learners from Term 1 who are desperate for their trip to the movies with me (they find me every time I am on duty!). I haven't forgotten them...just waiting on a suitable children's movie to play during school time 🙈. Hopefully, something comes out towards the end of this term. Otherwise we will move to plan B and head out for lunch together.

SCHOOL PHOTOS - TUESDAY 18TH JULY

Our school photos will be taken on Tuesday 18th of July (second day of term 3). The ordering and payment system is the same as last year. Please refer to the flyer that your child will bring home this week, and if you have any questions please contact Emma in the office (278 7117).

Important points:

  • Photos are ordered and paid for after the photos have been taken. You will receive a unique access code by email a few weeks after the photos have been taken, you will then be able to view their photos online, and order and pay for the photos you want.

  • Sibling photos (only for siblings who attend Tawhiti School ) - please complete the form on the back of the flyer that your child brings home this week and return to the office no later than MONDAY 17th JULY (you can order and pay the same way as with the other photos, using the unique access code emailed to you). There will be extra sibling photo forms available in the office.

FUNDRAISER - PIZZA LUNCH

Corrigan Electrial is having a 'shave off' to raise money for St John's Hawera and their new ambulance station. This is such a worthy cause that will benefit the whole of our community.

We would love to support this...so we are having a PIZZA LUNCH on Thursday 22nd June.

Children can order pizza from the school office on the Wednesday or Thursday morning.

Cheese and Ham/Cheese will be available. $4 for 2 pieces

NED'S MINDSET ASSEMBLY

As you will have seen on our recent HERO post, we have a school-wide NED Mindset Mission event this coming Monday.

NED's Mindset Mission is a character education program that centers around three important messages that have lifelong relevance: Never give up, Encourage others and Do your best. These messages fit perfectly with our school values and focus of perseverance this term.

During a 45 minute assembly (via zoom in their own classes), students will learn about the importance of these three life skills while also enjoying storytelling, magic, humor and yo-yo tricks. Here's the link with further information.

We are asked to promote the sale of the NED 'yoyo' - this is a way of paying it forward so that this great show can continue to be offered free of charge to schools. These can be ordered and purchased through the school office with either cash or eftpos.

sport

We have been extremely busy in the sports space this term. A huge thanks to both Sheri Hughes and Ashleigh Potts for all their mahi and organisation in this space.

Rippa Rugby

We recently had TRFU coaches down to do some skills and drills with our Rippa teams for the

South Taranaki tournament that was held on June the 2nd. The weather was not the best leading up to game day but we were lucky that our two competitive teams were still able to play. 10 teams competed and both the teams made the semi-finals in their pool and competed in the crossover pool. Overall, Tu Meke came 2nd and Takeovers 6th. Awesome effort from those involved and huge thanks to Anthony and Lou for your time coaching.

Winter Sport

Our seniors have been participating in either Rugby, Hockey, Football and Netball on Wednesdays. Tawhiti has hosted Turuturu and Hawera Primary so far. The next match is at Tawhiti on Wed 28th June against St Joseph's.

Winter Tournament (Bhana cup) trials are currently happening for Year 4-6 children (Monday netball, Tuesday football, Thursday Rugby and Friday Hockey). From these trials, we will select our teams who will go on to represent our school on Tuesday 25th July.

Water safety

We are incredibly lucky to have secured some funding to introduce, up skill and educate our tamariki in water safety. We have some awesome things planned between now and the end of the year for all of our tamariki.

  • Our middle and senior school classes will have FREE weekly swimming lessons at Wai O Rua Stratford Aquatic Centre. They will be bused there and back. Our middle school will go next term and our seniors in Term 4.
  • Our Seniors classes will be participating in a boat water safety course at Wai O Rua in August.
  • Our middle school classes will be participating in beach education workshops in Opunake in Term 4.
  • Our Junior classes will be participating in River Safety lessons in Term 4.
  • All students will head to the Hawera Pools in December for water safety skills lessons.

A hero post will go out to classes for permission in due course.

The drowning rates in New Zealand are concerning and we want to make sure our children have the skills to survive and thrive in water.
